Bible (9MP)
Spiritual Gifts, Abilities, Talents

Read: I Cor. 12:1-13 and Rom. 12:1-13

Class discussion:
What do the passages tell you about the different gifts and abilities God gave us?
Who has spiritual gifts and abilities? How does he or she get them?
Why are we given those gifts and abilities? How can we find out what we are being given?

• Apostle Paul is using the analogy of the human body to talk about the different gifts/talents God gave each one of us and how each one of those contributes to the functioning of the body. He talks about all the parts of the body being important. All being necessary. All contributing to the whole.

• God has given each one of us at least one gift or ability
• He has given us this so we can serve each other, not to boast about the fact that we have them
• We have a responsibility to discover what we have been given and use it
• If we choose not to discover and use it, we are stealing away from the functioning of our class, family, society, country, world.
• We find out what we have by examining ourselves and what we enjoy doing, what we are good at, where our heart is at. But also by asking people that are close to us and know us well and we can trust. Asking them if they have observed something in us that stands out as a quality or gift. Also we discover what we have by trying out different things. And above all by asking God to direct and show us through all the above.
• The most important thing however is not simply to discover what I have been given by God and use it to serve others but to discover and use it in love. I could have many talents and even use them but if I do so without love, the Bible says I am nothing.

Matthew 24:45-51 on our responsibility before God and humans to use our gifts.
